May Reduce Diarrhea and Constipation

Improvements in both diarrhea and constipation have been noted from Wakunaga Probiotics suggesting they have a normalizing effect on the intestinal tract. A clinical study of 180 patients from eight different medical facilities in Japan noted significant improvement in patients with soft stools or diarrhea from taking a probiotic product containing Wakunaga's Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum) (Table 1).3 Consistency and odor of stools also improved.

By comparison, improvement in diarrhea was noted in less than 45% of placebo subjects. A smaller clinical study by Dr. Honma et al.4 noted a reduction in diarrhea in 94% of patients (18 total) taking the same probiotic. Another pilot study using this probiotic, conducted by Dr. Terry Willard in Calgary, Canada, showed significant improvement in 11 of 13 subjects with diarrhea.5

Clinical Effects of Wakunaga Probiotics

  • Yeast Infections

In a pilot clinical study of 36 patients infected with the yeast Candida albicans, 89% had lower Candida albicans symptom scores after taking a probiotic containing our L. acidophilus and B. bifidum.8 Seventy-two percent had more than a 25% improvement in scores and 33% had more than 50% improvement in scores. Two patients, ages two and four, became completely symptom free after one month without any change in diet or other supplementation. These results are consistent with the anti-candidal effect of probiotics found in a review article in JAMA.9
